Cohering
Cohering is this proposal’s term for how a temporary pattern of experience holds together: a sense of self, a perceived world, or the meaning of a sentence. It replaced “resolution” after readers found that name misleading.

Status
This part of Space Immanence describes how experience changes over time. It was introduced in v1.5 as resolution and renamed in v2.0; the rename record explains why. It adds to the earlier account of self-reference, called the fold, without replacing it. The term appears in Part VIII of the working paper and the claim map: medium claims M4 and M5, and revised readings of speculative claims P1 and P2. It is subject to the restriction below and the unresolved objection 11.

Why the term was renamed
From v1.5 this page carried a condition for renaming the term: "'Resolution' connotes closure, which is the one thing it must not mean. If it keeps reading as closure under criticism, it will be renamed." On 14–15 July 2026, a pilot round of four AI readers reviewed these pages in a blind review designed to find weaknesses. The author commissioned the review; the readers had distinct model weights but came from one vendor. Three of four still read resolution as a hidden cause despite the page’s disclaimer. That met the threshold in objection 11’s third pre-registered condition for revision. The review also found wording on the site that suggested a final outcome. The term was renamed and those passages corrected. The changelog and reception ledger record the findings and changes.
“Cohering” was chosen to describe conditions temporarily holding together. It does not mean that something has been settled or shown to be true. The companion study Coherence Without Contact examines the related difference between an account feeling coherent and its being supported by evidence.
What the term adds
The fold names self-reference with two primitive orientations: outward as world and inward as awareness. A structural diagram alone does not describe how that becomes a lived moment.
That description leaves a question about change. How does a temporary sense of self or meaning form? A face is recognised as me, a sensation as danger, or a sentence as meaningful. Cohering names this pattern of conditions holding together as an experience.
Cohering means conditions temporarily holding together as a self, a world, a choice, or a perception, then becoming part of the conditions for what follows. It describes how a configuration becomes coherent enough to appear. It implies no final answer, closure, or certainty.
The working definition
The working definition uses reflexive system for a system whose activity includes representing aspects of its own activity:
In a reflexive system, conditions that do not yet hold together cohere, locally and temporarily. Such a coherence-event is conditioned, embodied, and self-modifying. A self is one of them. A world is another. Awareness is the fold’s transparency to its own cohering.
The intended pattern is real, in the sense that it occurs and has consequences, and dependent on its conditions. A whirlpool is an example of such dependence: it has a recognisable shape but cannot be removed from the river and continue as the same whirlpool. The pattern is also temporary. Each event is part of the conditions surrounding the next. Cohering describes this continuity; the term adds no cause acting on what follows. The v1.5 wording said "generative: every resolution alters the conditions for the next". The review found that this wrongly assigned causal work to the term itself, so that wording was withdrawn.
The precursor essays describe consciousness as not somewhere but somewhere-ing (see the earlier essays). The working paper likewise treats the self as a predictive process. “Cohering” names this emphasis on process rather than location.
A description must not become a hidden cause
Naming a process can make it sound like a separate thing that causes events. That would repeat the problem this proposal is trying to avoid.
“Cohering” names a temporary pattern within a reflexive system. It adds no substance, force, will, purpose, or hidden cause, and implies no goal for the universe. If the account depends on treating cohering as an ultimate entity, this part of the proposal should be retracted.
The term is useful only if it helps describe dependence without inventing another independent entity. Renaming it does not change the conditions for revision in objection 11. These include the fourth condition, added after the reader round, which asks whether the fold itself has been exempted from the demand to explain dependence.
A separate empirical question is when a coherent account is supported by something beyond itself. Two companion studies examine this: Coherence Without Contact and the Swarm Instrument. Their evidence concerns the claims each study tests; it cannot confirm the metaphysics.

Trace means a readable remainder of an event. It appears in the Aperture/I essays but has not been adopted into the framework. Adopting it would require a separate decision about what it adds.
Relation to dependent origination
Dependent arising is the Buddhist teaching that phenomena arise and cease through causes and conditions. It rejects both permanent independent existence and the view that nothing exists. Its account of emptiness denies a permanent, independent self behind experience.
Cohering translates dependent arising into the vocabulary of reflexive systems, term for term and no further:
- Dependent arising: this arises because these conditions are present.
- Cohering: those conditions hold together as this — a self, a fear, a world, a sentence, an action.
- Emptiness: the coherence is real but not independently self-existing.
- Transparency: the coherence is recognised as conditioned, rather than misread as fixed essence.
The suggested connection is that cohering may describe, in the language of self-referential systems, some of what dependent origination describes in experience. This is an interpretation to assess against the traditions concerned. Buddhist teachings do not establish the metaphysical proposal, and they also supply objections to it.
The claim layer
These claims are wired into the interactive claim map, where the term can be switched off and watched like any other claim. Putting it where it can break is the point: a claim protected from the framework's own falsification instrument earns nothing. The grading is honest about where the weight sits.
- Medium (M4): self, world, meaning, agency, and perception are conditioned coherence-events rather than fixed entities. Medium, not strong, because it rests on the fold.
- Medium (M5): the fold becomes phenomenologically available through repeated coherence-events into world, self, awareness, and action; practice is transparency to that cohering.
- Speculative (re-read P1): spacetime is how self-reference coheres, from within, into something an aperture can inhabit, with locality and duration as the way relational structure holds together (open to objection 17).
- Speculative (re-read P2): phenomenality is the character of the fold's cohering from within, not a property needing a bridge.
The spacetime reading (P1) stays speculative, and rightly so. It does, however, give the physics arm a better verb: not "spacetime is self-reference seen from inside" as a static fact, but "spacetime is how self-reference coheres into something an aperture can inhabit." Switch the speculative tier off in the claim map and the dynamic layer's medium claims (M4, M5) still stand, as v1.0's did. One honest subtraction from v1.5: this layer no longer claims to answer the structural realist's realizer objection — see the repaired reply at objection 13, which the reader round showed was using the dynamic layer for the very work this page promises it never does.
Where it pushes back on itself
The proposal’s own readings already supply the hardest objections, and they apply to the dynamic layer before they apply to anything else. A lens that only confirms itself is a horoscope, so the same fourth step the readings require of every position is owed here.
Madhyamaka
The Madhyamaka challenge to v1.0 is whether "one self-referential structure" is itself a reification, a new ultimate posited just where the most rigorous emptiness analysis refuses every ultimate, including its own. The dynamic layer inherits that challenge and sharpens it, because a dynamic noun is even easier to mistake for a hidden engine than a static one. The reply can only be the guardrail above, held strictly: cohering names a pattern, not a posited entity, and the moment it is treated as a cause behind appearances it has reproduced what emptiness dissolves. The reader round added a second edge to this blade: a framework that grades everything as conditioned coherence-events while exempting the fold alone has built a covert ultimate by asymmetry — which is why objection 11's fourth flip condition now watches the fold's exemption, not just this term's usage.
Dōgen
Dōgen presses from radical impermanence: if each being-moment is total and discontinuous, then a single structure that persists and merely coheres differently from moment to moment may itself be a reification of what is momentary. And his method-level rebuke lands here too. A structure you can diagram may be precisely what realisation is not, and adding a verb to the diagram does not exempt the diagram from the charge. Cohering must therefore stay a description offered from outside practice, never a substitute for it.
Žižek
The parallax objection is that Space Immanence harmonises a gap that should stay open, converting an irreducible split into a serene complementarity. The old name, "resolution", handed this objection a free win at the level of the word itself — it sounded like reconciliation, like tension resolving into peace — and under reader criticism that reading defeated the disclaimers, which is why the name is gone. "Cohering" claims less: a coherence-event does not heal the tension that produced it; it is a temporary, partial holding-together that immediately stands among new conditions, and therefore new tensions. If cohering ever means "the gap closed", it is being used wrong — but the word no longer does half the objector's work for them.
Verdict. Cohering is useful only as long as it makes the framework lighter. Its three nearest critics all warn against the same failure, turning a process word into a new ultimate, which is why the guardrail, not the vocabulary, is what this note stands on.
Open objection "You are reifying the dynamic term." Raised against "resolution" as objection 11 — where its flip conditions fired at pilot tier and forced this rename — and carried forward against "cohering" with the same conditions plus a fourth, alongside the existing objection that the fold is reified. It is not considered handled, for either name.
Where this goes next
v2.0 commits cohering as the dynamic layer's term. The open items are named so they cannot quietly close themselves.
- The new name enters its own probation. The rename is not an acquittal: "cohering" is watched under the same flip conditions that retired "resolution", and the pilot-tier finding still awaits an outside-lineage reader round. If the new name also reads as an engine under contact, the layer's problem is deeper than vocabulary, and the guardrail's retraction clause — not another rename — is the stated response.
- Trace is still essay language, not yet canonical (see the vocabulary table). Promoting it is a separate, deliberate decision, not a side effect of this one.
- The spine question is closed, answered no. Whether the dynamic layer should become the organizing spine of the whole framework was v1.5's open question. The reader round answered it: all four readers, independently, judged the promotion would make the work weaker, and the pre-registered criteria failed at the friendliest available tier. The proposal and the round's full report are preserved in the repository as the record of the path not taken. The layer stays a layer.
The most useful response, as ever, is not agreement. It is a precise account of where this breaks.
